Brian G wrote “I’ve purchased two sets of these blocks over the past two years because they are pleasant & used a lot by both my six & two year olds. One set was not enough for the both of them. I originally received the first set for my six year old when he was four because it reminded me of the sets that were in my kindergarten class when I was a child. Just basic wooden blocks & they were my favorite back in 1967. Well they are still favorites for my kids now in 2013. They play with them often each month designing new buildings, towers & cities. They are solid & durable & I’m sure they can last a lifetime. The carry box in which they come is a tremendous way to keep them stored. Sometimes the best toys are the most simplest of things.”
Audeepodee wrote “Great, solid standard blocks. Enough pieces for building just approximately anything (and knocking down, of course, with a satisfying crash). My kids come back to them on a regular basis even after playing on Wii & tablets. When I first opened the box, I thought there was NO WAY they would all fit back in the storage box neatly. I was wrong. They fit back in easily & perfectly every time. The box has hand holes & is nice & sturdy for putting away on a shelf. The architectural series blocks would be a tremendous addition to this set!”
J. Potter wrote “After shopping around quite a bit, I decided to take the chance on this set & spend the extra $10-15 (when compared to competitors prices on other block sets). Our two year old plays with them all of the time.
VERY glad I did! They are made up of an superior quality complex wood & are very smooth. I’ve bought a dozen or so M&D toys this year, & so far have been pretty disappointed in their quality control. So this set was a nice change.
The other nice surprise was that they all fit back in the box. When I first took it out of the amazon cardboard box, my husband said to me “there is no way we are ever getting those blocks back in there”. But the size/dimensions of all the pieces were very well thought out & it is surprisingly effortless to obtain them all back in the box in no particular order. So yay, finally received a M&D product worth the over inflated cost
(Also wanted to mention that I received lucky & only paid $35! It was on sale for $40 before xmas with another $5 discount for spending over $30 on a M&D product. Amazon has a M&D sale on approximately twice a year… & while not everything is included, many of there popular items are. I watch savings blogs on facebook to find these deals).”
Kevin E wrote “These blocks are great. They are a satisfactory size, & there are enough of them to keep at least one or perhaps two children occupied for some time.
All together in their case, they are HEAVY. Easily 20 pounds. (It specifies the weight somewhere, yet it feels like decidedly more than I was expecting). Your child cannot drag this out by himself; if you want them accessible regularly, you will have to find them a home in your child’s play area. You won’t want to drag them out of a closet, particularly from a high shelf.”
Badger wrote “These blocks FAR exceeded all expectations. The wood is solid & the finest of wood. The entire piece is smooth as silk. The pieces are perfectly squared so they can sit on end, even on carpet, without falling over very easily. They even have a very nice & strong box to store them in. My grandson just turned 3 & he loves building with them. It’s astonishing how his imagination works while playing with these blocks. I’m so pleased I ordered two sets. They are worth every penny!”
Meg wrote “This is a high quality set of blocks. When I saw the fit of the blocks in the box, I was concerned that it might be complex to obtain them all back in, yet the bottom has some styrofoam, so it’s not as tight as it looks. My girls (4 & 7) almost enjoy putting them back as much as building with them, it’s like a puzzle! We received it for them for Christmas a few weeks ago & they play with them every day! I didn’t know if they would run out of blocks before they were done building, yet I decided to start by buying one & order another after if it was an issue, yet so far it hasn’t been. I moreover considered buying a play rug or sets with signs, trees, people, etc. to aid in pretend play, yet decided to wait on that too & I’m glad I didn’t — my girls just use the toys they already have to pretend with the blocks. The blocks are huge enough & there are enough of them that my girls like to build structures to then use in pretend play with their other toys (Barbies, Polly Pocket, Little People, etc.). I’ve been really pleased with how much my four year old has used them & how her skill with them has increased. The spacial awareness, geometry & physics of building toys have never been her strong suit & she has not had a lot of interest in building in the past, yet she plays with these daily & I’m seeing a huge improvement in her understanding of how they work & fit together. It’s so nice to have such a satisfactory developmental toy that my child enjoys (they are tremendous for imaginitive play as well, yet that’s not a weakness of hers at all!). I couldn’t be happier with them. They are the typical high quality, well thought out, developmentally beneficial toy that I’ve come to expect from Melissa & Doug toys. We have a baby boy as well, so I’m looking forward to a lot of years of use, I just wish I had ordered them when my oldest was a toddler.”
John Y wrote “Exactly what it should be a simple set of unit blocks with a container. Great for building things even with a smaller child who is learning. The container seems like it might be harder to use based on the fact that the blocks are packed so tight. That said it has extra space due to some foam at the bottom that you can remove. It has turned out to be quite effortless actually to obtain these back in the box.”
